Things To Consider Before Stuccoing Over Stucco
Before moving any further, we will confirm that it is indeed possible to stucco over existing stucco: this can allow you to add a new texture or cover any damaged or unattractive walls. There are a few important considerations to take note of before completing the process of stuccoing over your existing stucco. Due to the potential complexity of this process, we also recommend consulting a professional to work through the questions below prior to the installation process.
Is There Any Loose Stucco?
Before installing any stucco, you must first check if there is any loose stucco on the existing siding. You can do so by rubbing and tapping the wall, and checking to see if there are any hollow parts as you do so. A hollow sound when tapping indicates that the stucco has come loose from the flashing or the interior structure. Any loose stucco will need to be removed by scraping or sandblasting the wall prior to the installation, to provide a solid structure to apply your new stucco on top.
If the House Has Been Painted, Is It in Good Condition?
If the house has been painted and is not in good condition, it can be an issue when applying a new coat of stucco. Loose or chipping paint can reduce the bonding power of stucco layers, and similar to the loose stucco pieces mentioned above, it should be removed by sandblasting prior to any application. If paint is in good condition and you use a bonder, there should be no issue applying a new coat of stucco atop the surface.
Is There Efflorescence?
Efflorescence is a white powdery substance or film which can be on top of the surface of your stucco. It is composed of the salt crystals that can be left behind when salty water has evaporated on the surface of your home. Similar to chipping paint or loose stucco, this can reduce the bonding power of your stucco. Spraying a mild acid, such as vinegar, can help remove efflorescence and increase the bonding power of your stucco wall enough for application.
Is the Wall Dirty?
Dirt should be washed off prior to the installation process as well, to help reduce any bonding issues. Depending on the level of dirt on the wall, a pressure washer or a hose can be used to clean the wall prior to application.
Does the Wall Have Any Cracks?
If there are any cracks or holes in the surface of your existing stucco, it is necessary to repair these prior to applying any new stucco.
Is the Flashing in Good Condition?
The flashing will be beneath the surface of your stucco at connection points, such as windows or doors. You must inspect the flashing prior to any application to ensure that there is not any rust or separation, and repair it if there are any issues.
Preparing the Old Stucco
Once you have gone through the inspection processes above and ensured that there is no damage to the outer layer of your stucco, you can begin the preparation process. You’ll need to first clean the surface by sweeping and whisking, to ensure any dust or dirt has been removed to provide sufficient bonding power. You can also use a pressure washer to clean the surface. Allow the stucco to dry for 3 to 5 days before applying any stucco layers on top of the existing stucco.
Applying the New Stucco
At this point, your stucco is fully prepared for the application of the new stucco. You’ll first want to apply a layer of bonding agent to the outer layer of your existing stucco. The instructions for the bonding agent should be clear on the packaging of your product, and should be followed closely for best results. You can then use a flat trowel to apply your mixed stucco cement mixture to the outer layer of your stucco, at around ¼ to ⅛ of an inch thick. You should work from the bottom and pull the mix up the wall for best results. Using your trowel, you can mold and shape the stucco to get the texture you desire. You should follow the layering instructions made available on the stucco mixture of your choosing, and allow sufficient time for your new stucco to dry.
Applying stucco can be a complex process, as can the inspection of your old stucco to check for structural integrity and damage. If you are considering a stucco installation, it is worth consulting with a professional to ensure a quality product and safe installation.
